Outreach and Education
I have organised or been part of numerous outreach events over the years. I love to talk about my research and travel and have provided talks for local and national science societies and non-scientists of all ages from school kids upwards. Below are a few of the events that the School of Earth and Ocean Sciences at Cardiff University have organised for National Science and Engineering Week over the last few years. I would like to say a big "thank you" to the partner organisations for all these events who gave time, space and equipment to allow us to exhibit our science to a wider audience.
The Floating Classroom:
Venue: Cardiff Bay and the School of Earth, Ocean & Planetary Sciences, Cardiff University Research Vessel "Guiding Light" will become a floating classroom in Cardiff Bay.
School groups will measure water parameters, view the seabed on underwater TV and sample sediments. At Techniquest students will analyse and synthesise data collected to create an overview that highlights interactions between the geosphere, hydrosphere and biosphere.
From mountains to micro-scapes - Minerals in the digital age: Venue: Cynon Valley Museum & Gallery, Depot Road, Gadlys, Aberdare Digital technology and cutting-edge printing techniques are revealing dramatic micro-worlds within minerals with fantasy landscapes, seascapes, shorelines, mountains, valleys, lakes, rivers, waterfalls and life. This exhibition illustrates this "new world" with spectacular mineral specimens, breathtaking art-prints, textiles and ceramics and explains the science of the natural phenomena beyond the aesthetic.
Water from the hills: Brecon Carreg mineral water - from source to bottle:Venue: Brecon Carreg Natural Mineral Water, Brecon Carreg Plant, Trap nr. Llandeilo
Brecon Carreg natural mineral water is bottled at source in the village of Trap, Carmarthenshire. Its purity originates from the special geological features of the Black Mountain. This event explores the relationship between geology and water supply during a tour of the local geology, the well-site and bottling plant.
